01Edgar DegasFrench Impressionist (1834–1917), celebrated for his studies of movement — dancers, racehorses, women at work. A restless draughtsman and pastellist, he favoured the candid, off-balance viewpoint of the snapshot and called himself a realist more than an Impressionist, capturing modern Parisian life with unsentimental precision.
